How to Get Married in Hawaii: A Guide for Mainland U.S. Couples

Hawaii’s breathtaking landscapes, from golden beaches to lush mountains, make it a dream destination for couples planning a wedding or eloping. Whether you envision a luxury celebration or a romantic elopement, getting married on one of Hawaii’s islands is easier than you might think. Here’s everything you need to know about how to get married in Hawaii.

Easy steps for planning your wedding or elopement in Hawaii:

1. Choose your wedding date

  • Consider the time of year or season that you would like to get married

  • Consider any dates that are meaningful to you as a couple, and choose one of those

  • Plan for the Weather: Hawaii’s climate is warm year-round, but weather can vary depending on the location on the island and the season:

    • Winter (December to February) is the best time of year to get married in Hawaii!

      • Winter is a peak tourist season in Hawaii, but it is peak season for a reason! The temperatures are more mild compared to the summer, and are perfect for escaping the cold on the mainland and trading snow for sunshine!

      • Winter is usually slow season for wedding vendors in cold climates on the mainland, so winter is the ideal time to hire them for your Hawaii elopement.

      • Popular spots and beaches may be busier during peak season, however there are easy ways to ensure privacy for your ceremony, portraits, and activities.

      • Rainy afternoons are more common in the winter, especially in lush areas.

      • The sun goes down early, but the shortened days are still perfect for your celebration.

      • The northern areas versus the southern areas of each island can also vary widely in weather and temperatures. The southern areas tend to be more sunny, warmer, and drier, whereas the northern areas tend to get more rain. Research each island to determine which best fits your wedding vision.

No matter when you choose to say “I do,” Hawaii’s natural beauty ensures your wedding will be unforgettable.

2. Choose your island

Hawaii has six major islands, but these four are the ones that couples can choose for their elopement day:

  • Big Island

  • Kauai

  • Maui

  • Oahu

The Big Island is my personal favorite island for elopements, followed closely by Kauai, and then Maui. Here are some things to consider when choosing which island to elope:

Big Island: The Island of Hawaii

Best For: Couples looking for diversity in landscapes and adventure.

  • Highlights:

    • Home to active volcanoes and diverse landscapes.

    • Offers everything from black sand beaches to volcanic landscapes.

    • Unique venues like lava rock coastlines and luxury resorts in Kona or Kohala.

    • Activities for adventurous guests, such as snorkeling with manta rays or exploring Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

  • Considerations:

    • The island’s size means longer travel times between attractions.

    • Perfect for couples who want a wedding weekend packed with exploration.

Kauai: The Garden Isle

Best For: Couples who love nature and seek a serene, tropical vibe.  Ideal for couples seeking lush greenery and dramatic cliffs.

  • Highlights:

    • Lush greenery, dramatic cliffs, and cascading waterfalls.

    • Unique venues such as botanical gardens or private estates overlooking the Na Pali Coast.

    • A laid-back atmosphere ideal for intimate ceremonies.

  • Considerations:

    • Kauai receives more rainfall than other islands, particularly on the north shore.

    • Best for couples who value privacy and natural beauty over nightlife.

Maui: The Valley Isle

Best For: Couples dreaming of luxury, romance, and stunning landscapes. Famous for its luxury resorts and the scenic Road to Hana.

  • Highlights:

    • Renowned for its upscale resorts and world-class beaches, like Wailea and Kaanapali.

    • Breathtaking venues along the scenic Road to Hana.

    • The option to say “I do” with Haleakalā’s sunrise or sunset as your backdrop.

  • Considerations:

    • Maui is popular among honeymooners and can be pricey during peak seasons.

    • Perfect for intimate weddings and elopements.

Oahu: The Heart of Hawaii

Best For: Couples seeking convenience, vibrant culture, and iconic locations.

  • Highlights:

    • Home to Honolulu and Waikiki Beach.

    • Easy access to a variety of wedding venues, from luxury resorts to historic sites like Kualoa Ranch.

    • A bustling nightlife and a wide range of dining options.

  • Considerations:

    • Oahu is the busiest island, so expect more crowds, especially in tourist hotspots.

    • Ideal for larger weddings with guests who want plenty of activities.

Lanai and Molokai are more expensive and more private islands that few tourists are able to visit. Planning a wedding on these islands is a challenge, so it is better to choose one of the more popular islands for visitors.

3. Understand the legal requirements

If you are a US citizen, you can easily get legally married in Hawaii. Getting married in Hawaii is straightforward for U.S. couples:

  • Apply for a marriage license

    • Apply Online: You can apply for a marriage license online through the Hawaii Department of Health. Learn more about applying for a marriage license here There is no waiting period or residency requirements.

    • In-Person Appointment: Once you arrive in Hawaii, schedule an appointment with a marriage license agent to finalize your application. Both partners must be present, and you’ll need valid photo identification (a driver’s license or passport).

    • Fee: The license fee is $65.

    • Don't forget to bring your marriage license to your ceremony!

    • You and your partner, your officiant, and your witnesses will sign the marriage license after the ceremony to make it official.

  • Alternative to getting a Hawaiian marriage license:

    • If you prefer, you can get legally married in your home state and then just do your vow exchange and portraits in Hawaii.

  • Apply for necessary permits

4. Hire a photographer to capture your day

  • If you hire me as your photographer, I can help you choose other vendors, location scout for your ceremony and portraits, and plan your elopement day timeline.

  • I can also help you with permits!

5. Hire other local vendors

  • Officiant: You CANNOT self-solemnize in Hawaii, so you will need to choose someone to officiate your ceremony.

    • Your officiant can be a friend or family member if they are ordained. (It's easy to get ordained online!)

    • There are often people who are ordained that perform wedding ceremonies that are not civil officials. Search on google for wedding officiants to find someone who suits you.

    • You can work with your officiant to write your wedding ceremony script.

    • Note: You will need your officiant's information when applying for your marriage license.

  • Wedding Planner / Coordinator: They’ll navigate the logistics and ensure everything aligns with your vision.

  • Florists: Use tropical blooms like orchids, hibiscus, and plumeria to add a Hawaiian touch to your wedding.

  • Caterers: Incorporate local cuisine such as poke, kalua pig, and fresh tropical fruits into your wedding meal.

  • If you hire me as your photographer, I can help you choose other vendors that meet your vision!

6. Book travel and accommodations to Hawaii

Ensure a stress-free trip with these tips:

  • Book travel and accommodations early: Secure flights and accommodations well in advance, especially if your wedding is during peak season.

  • If you find a cheap trans-atlantic to any Hawaiian island that isn't the one you are trying to get to, short island-hopping flights through Hawaiian airlines are usually very affordable and can get you to your desired island destination.

  • I am an expert traveler and can recommend flights and hotels or airbnbs for your trip to Hawaii. Just ask!

7. Plan other wedding details

  • Your wedding attire (dresses, suits, shoes, rings, etc)

  • Put together your guest list (if you are having guests)

  • Find your ceremony location on your chosen Hawaiian island (this is something I can help scout for you!)

    • Beaches: Opt for a picturesque ceremony on the sand. Note that permits may be required for public beaches.

    • National Parks: Say your vows with a backdrop of waterfalls or volcanoes. Check regulations for weddings in protected areas.

  • Write your wedding ceremony script (you can work with your officiant to do this!)

  • Write your vows

  • Incorporate local customs to make your wedding truly special:

    • Lei Exchange: Symbolizing love and respect, lei exchanges are a beautiful addition to your ceremony.

    • Hawaiian Blessings: Consider a traditional Hawaiian officiant or blessing for an authentic touch.

8. Plan your celebration

  • What kind of food do you want to eat? Consider hiring a private chef to cook for you and your partner on your elopement day in an epic location. (I can recommend some excellent caterers and private chefs!)

  • What kind of drinks do you want to have?

  • Are there any activities that you want to provide for your guests (if you are having guests)?

  • Figure out fun activities to do on your elopement day to celebrate (see some inspiration here!)

Planning a destination wedding in Hawaii is an adventure filled with breathtaking moments and unforgettable experiences. With a little preparation and the right team, your Hawaiian wedding will be everything you’ve dreamed of and more.
